Covid-19 disproportionately affects BAME communities.

Recent government and health reports have highlighted that Covid-19 is disproportionately affecting the health and wellbeing of people from the BAME communities.

WHAT HAVE WE DONE

Cornerstone Community Church has been working with Dudley Council and Transforming Communities Together, to plan and deliver webinars to help BAME communities live longer, safe and healthier lives.

The online webinars gave members of the BAME communities the opportunity to learn more about the reasons why they have been disproportinately affected and to get key health information, by listening to and putting questions to experts about their health, care and wellbeing.

With over 200 participants registered, the webinars provided people from BAME communities, employers, health and care professionals, carers and volunteers an opportunity to engage with experts about their health and wellbeing.

The recordings of the webinars are available on the Cornerstone Community Church’s Youtube channel.

Topics covered include mental health and wellbeing, safety in the workplace and the impact of Covid-19 on diabetics.

COVID 19 & BAME COMMUNITY FRIDAY FOCUS WEBINARS

Jacqui Demirovksa, minister at Cornerstone Community Church, said

It is such an important time to engage with the BAME communities, individuals and families. Facing the challenges together we welcome the time to listen, talk and think about what more is needed to keep safe and well.

These seminars provide an opportunity to share concerns, engage together and make a difference as a community.

James Henderson, senior development worker at Transforming Communities Together, said

At TCT, we want to see all people and communities thrive and flourish. We have been concerned to see that evidence that Covid-19 is disproportionately affecting the health and wellbeing of people from the BAME communities and so we're delighted to be partnering with Public Health and Cornerstone Community Church to share an empowering way for people to explore more about this complex issue.

Bal Kaur, acting director of public health at Dudley Council, said:

The coronavirus has had a disproportionate impact in BAME communities.

These seminars will provide an opportunity to explore information coming out of the lockdown from public health, NHS and community specialists.

We want to provide information, advice and guidance so that our BAME communities feel reassured.
